The Best Christmas Songs Ever! (Well my top 5 anyway)

I have to admit I’m not the biggest fan of Christmas. If truth be known I’m more the Grinch than Buddy the Elf.
There are a few things I like about the festive season though.

  1. Christmas Movies
  2. Mince Pies
  3. Christmas Music
  4. Christmas Lights

Its quite surprising that number three is there. One of my first jobs was in a Pizza restaurant and come mid November right through to New Year, we had the same tape. (I’ve put in a Wiki link for those who don’t know what a tape is!)

This tape would play on a loop from opening to closing 7 days a week! You think I’d be sick of Christmas songs after that!

We weren’t allowed to watch much(any) tv as kids, but come Christmas my Mother would dig out the Christmas Music and have it playing in the background. When I say music I mean Bing Crosby, Elvira and various choirs singing Christmas Carols!

So without further ado here are my top five Christmas Tunes. In true Top of the Pops format I’ll count down from 5 to 1!

5 – Band Aid (Do they know it’s Christmas) The Original

No matter how many Christmas parties, radio plays or shopping centres I hear this song in. The hairs on the back of my neck bristle when I hear the opening bars.

The lines each artist sang matched their voices to perfection. Bono, Boy George and George Michael to name a few.

It was also the first Charity single, and in my humble opinion is still the best.

4 – Chris Rea (Driving Home for Christmas

This is a strange one. I couldn’t give any specific reasons for this being in my top five. Except it has that happy feel about it. Even though Chris Rea’s gravelly voice doesn’t make it sound so cheery.

3 – East 17 (Stay Another Day)

Another unusual one in at number 3. I wasn’t a fan of East 17 when they were making hits in the 90’s but this is another song that I just like.

Besides a few Christmas bells and the fact it was Christmas number one it’s not actually a Christmas song. It’s about the lead singer / writer brother’s suicide.

2 – David Bowie / Bing Crosby (The Drummer Boy)

Come they told me par rup a pum pum.

I defy you not to join in singing once you hear the opening line! Two of the finest voices to ever perform. One of those songs you can play quietly in the background or sing along too after a couple of Christmas drinks.

Which brings us to my all time favourite Christmas song.

1 – The Pogues featuring Kirsty McColl (Fairytale of New York)

I’ve not met a single person who doesn’t like this song. Every office Christmas party or Pub that this is played in Everyone sings along.

Some fun facts about the video.

  • There is no choir of the NYPD
  • The Pipes and Drums who played the choir didn’t know Galway Bay so played the Mickey Mouse Club theme instead
  • The band nearly ended up in “the drunk tank” whilst filming, except for the intervention of Matt Dillon.

So there you have my top five Christmas songs. I’d love to know your favourites.
